More sophistocated but misses the warmth of Solitude Standing
This is probably the best work by Suzanne Vega in my opinion- beautiful melodies, a poet's heart for words and imagery, and a voice calm, pure, and even sad in all the right places. I fell in love with Suzanne Vega from Solitude Standing. From this beautiful start, Vega has had other works here and there that I purchased but I was never excited about them as much as I was about Beauty and Crime. Most of the reviews I read had good things to say, and I agree. Musically, there is more complexity and a richer sound than her earlier arrangements of vocals, acoustic guitar, and bass. This is quite evident in the first two tracks and is especially good on Bound, with all the strings and great bass sounds. Vega, as a songwriter, also displays her craft with confidence, creating compelling stories, images, and melodies about NYC, love, and references to literary and pop culture, i. e. , Edith Wharton and Frank and Ava. However, I felt a deeper emotional attachment or connection to Solitude Standing than I did with Beauty and Crime. Perhaps I was in a different stage of my life at the time of Solitude Standing (I remember listening to this on my Walkman walking around the city as a student) but Solitude Standing was just more nuanced, beautiful, and more intensely captured the imagery and moods of the city and of love. Although Beauty and Crime is musically more sophisticated, it somehow misses the warmth, gentleness, and beauty that was Solitude Standing. Overall, I appreciate this CD from an arrangement standpoint and Suzanne Vega is still one of my favorite artists (albeit some of this sentiment is still carryover from Solitude Standing). Although the CD lacks the warmth and beauty of songs like Gypsy, Ironbound/Fancy Poultry, and Calypso, there is a reminder of this beauty in the last song, Anniversary. This is my favorite song in the CD. .
Beauty & Crime
e. Beauty & Crime being Vega's 7th studio album and her 2007 release and when it was released the critics gave it many positive reviews, i. , Allmusic gave it 4 stars. I tend to agree with Allmusic and I also give this album 4 stars. The sound quality is crisp, the lyrics well-written and the album peaked at #9 in Estonia. The booklet is quite nice with many nice photographs of Ms Vega and it has all the lyrics included and we get a list of whom plays what on the album. 4/5.
A quietly satisfying album
But what she has lost in sheer brilliance, she has gained in maturity. Suzanne Vega has never again hit the heights of brilliance that she hit on her first three albums, which were almost audacious in their creation of a modern folk paradigm, or her fourth album, which experimented with the limits of her art. This is a mature album, filled with quiet observations on life from someone who has managed to survive it. You will not be blown away by this album, it is not something audaciously brilliant, but if you listen carefully you will be rewarded.
Some of her best work, excellent sonics
I think its her best work ever. This has to be some of her best work ever! If your a Vega fan of ANY of her past works, this CD will sure to make you happy.
The quality of her band/players is also excellent.
The sonics are excellent, as I own a high end audio system [$80,000+] in a dedicated/treated listening room, and can clearly hear everything that is on the disk.
I suppose on car or computer audio systems things may not seem to clear, perhaps, but in a high resolution system everything sounds very good.
I have yet to try the disk in my car. . . . . .
You really can't go wrong with this CD, a must have for the S. Vega fan and others of similiar musical interests/genre.
