Still classic and never too worn for another listen
My impression of it may be influenced by its being my first exposure to The Velvet Underground, but I still enjoy it and think it is the best "best of" I've heard for listenability, and there is not one song that I feel the need to skip over for not being in the mood. I found this tape in the trash when I was 13 and, after listening to it until it didn't work anymore, I bought the CD even after buying nearly all their other albums because of its rockin-ness. It's true it is not representative of everything they've done, but best-of's are often more about the pop-like classics than the artistic scope of a band. If you're curious, I think it's a fine place to start.


WHATCHOO DOIN' UPTOWN?
CONTAINS MOST OF THEIR BEST SONGS. THIS IS A VERY GOOD VALUE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO TO GO OUT AND BUY ALL OF THE OLD VELVET UNDERGROUND ALBUMS: THEN THIS COMPILATION WILL DO VERY NICELY. MY FAVORITE SONG IS STILL "(I'M) WAITING FOR THE MAN". THE BEST OF LOU REED.


My Favorite Best of CD
I can't think of any other "Best Of" album that I like more. I overly love this compilation. I don't really care for "Best Of" albums, but this one is amazing. Having also purchased the four Velvet Underground albums I feel I can say that this CD does a fine job of putting together a lot of there amazing work. There is a lot from the 1st album on here, but It's for a good reason. There are songs on the 1st album that you cannot ignore. If you have no real exposure to the Velvet Underground, then get this here CD. There are, of course, a lot of good songs that didn't make it, but this is an amazing mix of their stuff. Listening to this will hurl you into the weird heroin soaked world of The VU. They're an addiction you can't quit. .


You must be serious about your music!
Do not knock its lack of songs b/c its just a sampling. This is an introduction to one of the most important bands of all time. You cannot have a "best of" for this band.

The songs are not immediately enjoyable. . . rather they grow on you. There is beauty, rock, ugliness, noise etc. . . welcome to the world of VU!

For every rock fan, this should be a top 10 of Dessert Island Discs. For the unfamilair, if you like this, then your next purchase should be VU live 1969. You will hear jam band/extended/mellow verions of these songs.

This is a band for people that take their music very seriously.


Excellent Primer


I am not one to give out 5 stars blithely. If you don't own the entire VU catalog, then this is essential listening for every fan of popular music of the last 50 years. If you are reading this page, then buy this record!.
