Customer Reviews Mixed feelings I went to see Venom live in Atlanta, Georgia, in my first-ever true heavy/death metal concert. I have mixed feelings about Venom, in general, mostly due to an inexcusable event from about 1986 or 1987. I had seen Ozzy, AC/DC, and some other hard rock groups in my years but never a truly heavy metal band such as Venom (although I certainly saw tons afterwards). The opening bands played and when it came time for Venom to take the stage the crowd was wild and was chanting, "Venom! Venom! Venom. " Then there was an announcement over the house P. A. stating, "Due to circumstances beyond our control Venom will not be performing tonight. " Puzzled looks came over the entire place. I had never seen such a thing happen before. After all, nothing was said right up to the very moment they were to take the stage. The previous bands' equipment was all cleared away and only Venom's equipment remained on the stage. Their guitar and bass sat in their stands waiting to be picked up and played. It was April Fools Day so everyone thought a second and figured it was a joke, but it wasn't. That was evident when the house lights went up and they started tearing down Venom's stage. Everyone left the place completely dumbfounded. No reasoning for the last-second cancellation was ever given. I called the place the following day to find out what happened. The manager said that earlier in the day Venom had come down to do their sound check. He said that as soon as they walked in they looked around for just a few seconds and said, "This place is too small. We're not playing. " The guy said he was on the phone with their management right up until the time the cancellation announcement was made. He told them of the great crowd that was there and how they should come play. Yet, they refused to do so because the place was "too small. " Having said all of that, I've had an extremely bitter taste in my mouth for Venom ever since I found out about their choice to cancel and why they chose to do so. More than once I've said that they totally suck as a band and had no choice but to rely on lights, theatrics, etc. , in order to be a decent live band. Nonetheless, I've still checked in on them from time to time to see how they might sound, especially as years went by and later albums were released. I agree with the majority of what I've read, that being that this album is by far the most polished, best-produced album of all of Venom's albums. "Powerful" is the best word I can come up with to describe the sound and the mix of the guitar, bass and drums. This is head and shoulders above any other Venom album of which I have heard. But, regardless, the sting of Venom's snub will never fully heal and I can't really ever find myself saying that they are all that good of a band to begin with. Too bad their rotten attitude has corrupted their potential to be a pretty decent band in the minds of people such as myself. I wonder how many other places were cancelled for the same, stupid reason? Lastly, the blatantly anti-Christian lyrics are juvenile at best. Give it a rest and come up with a better idea than that nonsense. VENOMOUS!!! Just got the Resurrection CD. This isn't a technical review by any means. If you like straight ahead killer riffs, dark menacing, downright evil lyrics and vocals and awesome pounding bass this CD has it all! Powerful sound from just 3 musicians! . Venom's (black) magic The distorted Bass and guitar sound literally metallic and hit like cannons. Let me say first that this is the finest production sound-wise that Venom has ever had in their career. Many of the songs are memorable because of the awsome (albiet generic) riffs. Nothing in this album is uncontrolled, which is strange. . . . For Venom. I give it a five because it is Venom, and even though it's nothing like the classic sonic chaos that Venom made a name for themselves with, it is still a powerful piece of work. .
