Should more appropriately called "0"
This thing is horrible. Their first album was a classic, their second one pretty bad.

It's good. But...
However, unlike most people, I do not think it's their best. I, like most, fell in love with the Femmes, over their debut album ("Violent Femmes"). I am a man that seeks diversity, in music. That album (while a phemoninal piece of recorded material), is a bit too intent on satisfying the masses, to push it past second best, for me.

The Femmes are a prime example of diversity, and this album proves it. Featuring a plethora of sonic stylings, ranging from the acoustic punk awesomeness that is "Dating Days", to the goofy (I guess you could call it folk) back-handed compliment track, "Fat", to a song that I think may be Gordon Gano's most successful attempt at draging salt water from the dryest of eyes, "Nothing Worth Living For".

Don't let the stars fool you, THIS IS A GOOD ALBUM. It gets points for diversity, originality, and not giving a damn what the masses think. Interestingly, though, it seems to lose points for the same reasons. It's so diverse, that the album loses it's sense of purpose. It's so original, that it seems to lack any bit of familiarity, save for it's resemblence to the Femmes own work. As far as the masses go, it's important to have pop sensibilities. That's what made their debut, as well as "American Music" and even (arguably) "Hallowed Ground" (which, by the way, is my favorite) so great.

If you like the Femmes, get this album. Just don't get it until you've got the three I mentioned, above.

Standard review
Then again, all of the femmes albums i've heard are great. This album is one of the finest the femmes have recorded, especially the acoustical songs. If you like the Violent Femmes, you can't go wrong with this album or any of their other albums. Buy this album; buy them all. Why not? Enrich your life and your ear. I don't care. The femmes are great!.

A nice change.
I liked "Violent Femmes" enough to stick with them, and I'm glad I did. After hearing "Blister In The Sun" at one too many parties, I decided to check out "3". This may not be the crowd pleaser their other cd's are, but it's good none the less. And like the other albums, this one has it's share of sing-a-longs. "Nightmares" and "Outside The Palace" are both great. "Fat" has really funny lyrics". Then there's "Nothing Worth Living For", which is a pretty morbid change of pace, but is one of the most beautifully depressing songs ever. So if you're a fan of the band, but need a break from "Add It Up", get "3".

Soild Album
Their best? No. An strong album. But how many albums are as good as Hallowed Ground? If all you know of the femmes are songs you heard at frat parties than you might not like this or any of their albums other than the first.
