Their true masterpiece
Not only that, but Hallowed is more musical, more diverse, and truely shows how brilliant and talented they were. No question their debut was a masterpiece as well and probably has more good songs, but the best songs from Hallowed blow away anything from the debut. It is also more 'alternative', which I think was kind of the point back then. Brings back memories of college, the ganja,etc. Favorite songs are Never Tell, title track, Black girls, and I hear the rain. .


good, but "Country Death Song" is live on this version
I bought this yesterday on Amazon, and the first song is a live version!? I'm going to see if I can get my money back or at least get the studio version of the song. Maybe I'm mistaken, but when I had this album in college, "Country Death Song" was a studio version just like the rest of the album. It wasn't always live was it? .


Silly but challenging!
This isn't what anyone was looking for. The Femmes definitely choked on their followup cd. The 1st album is a great piece of work. The 2nd is much less so. Still it's pretty interesting for them to have so completely bucked expectations and produced full of twangy bible-banging songs. The idea of challenging their fans with material that met some of the bands own needs was both an affront and a surprise; but foisting Southern religiosity on people was more than they bargained for. You couldn't convince anyone who was dissappointed and hated this, that H. G. had merit when it came out. And the Femmes were off; charting a course for middle-age single-hit rockers, instead of some more worthy destination. The 1st CD made us rock. The 2nd made us laugh. That wasn't I was asking of it but there it is. The rest of the Femmes output continued the collapse.

Every song offers a new experience, unlike like those albums you buy where you feel like you bought a whole album for one song. Absolute gold.

If you liked mid 80's alternative, nothing could be better.


One of the funnest dark albums ever!
Dark and at times campy this never gets old to my ears. By far my fav of all the femm albums. I know the first album is full of some of their best known tracks but I hung up my beer-bong many years ago and have come to appreciate this to it's fullest. The classic folksy country death song gives me a chill when Gano cries out that he hung if self in shame, his voice is filled with the crackling of a man who has stepped over the line of sanity. The improv in the middle of black girls was at first annoying to me but it grows on you now it's one of my favorites. But the undisputed champ on this album for me is Never Tell. It has typical femm lyrics that just stick in your head and at over 7 minutes long it has left me breathless and my jaw hurting when jammin along. if you like the femms at all it must not be missed!.
