I, on the other hand, love the Hondo stuff... You need to buy them both. First of all, why they would ever turn this into Volume 1 and Volume 2 I don't understand. The music is sensational if you like Austin music at all. The Hondo poetry, I think, is great. It puts your head in exactly the right spot to fully appreciate the music. Just so no one gets scared of all this talk about Hondo and cowboy poetry, the cuts are short and sweet. Get both volumes. I think that if you have this and can't see clear to get most or all of JJW's stuff, this set is the one to get.
I never understand the obsession with Hondo. Yes, I lived in Austin and visited Luckenbach; it reminds me of when a good friend really likes someone that you think is just okay (or not nice at all). Hence, recordings of his poetry, etc. are an indulgence of the artist (similar to Paul McCartney inflicting Linda Eastman on us or John Lennon inflicting Yoko Ono on us). Avoid the Hondo-related cuts and take the new band with a grain of salt.
