Fifteen minutes ticksSophomore slumpish release wearing its raggedness and derivative nature on sleeve in light of provoking material, if still providing occasional drunken grandeur.
Bows + Arrows
C. Bows + Arrows was a huge step for The Walkmen, mostly because the songs "What's In It For Me" and "Little House Of Savages" were featured in Fox's "The O. " Also, "The Rat," my favorite Walkmen song, was featured in the video game Major League Baseball 2K7's soundtrack. The album was high up on almost every 2004 "best of" list, and gained much acclaim from Pitchfork, Allmusic, and many others. Like other Walkmen albums, B+A starts off slowly, this time with "What's In It For Me," and by track two you realize that this was money well spent. While staying true to their original dry, jangley sound, they experiment with faster, post-punk influenced songs such as "The Rat" and "The North Pole. " The Walkmen seem to have influenced many popular indie bands of today, such as Cold War Kids and White Rabbits. I often find it hard to tell the difference between The Walkmen and CWK, with their vintage piano-driven sound. I haven't listened to all of You & Me yet, so as of now this is my favorite Walkmen album.
bows + arrows
" It has the same stand-outish clanky piano melodies and Hamilton Leithauser's syrupy vocals. If you liked The Walkmen's previous album, "Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone", then you'll like their second full-length release "Bows + Arrows. You can hear the band's growth in the second album. It sounds a bit tighter and slightly more aggressive.
I agree with some of the other reviewers' comparisons to the Replacements and U2. Just listen to the track "Little House of Savages," and you can hear remnants of both. My favorite track has to be "The Rat. " You can blast this song and feel every bit of emotion that Leithauser and the rest of the band put into the song.
This group is great to listen to no matter what mood you are in. It has such a variety of songs that it fits any occasion, whether you feel like listening to something mellow or aggressive. I also agree with M. Smith's opinion of their live show. . . it is amazing. I saw them play at Austin City Limits music festival in 2005. There was such a broad range of people in the audience. My friends and I just sat at the back of the crowd on a blanket and watched the emotion of the crowd. . . there was everything from hippie-girls dancing like crazy to the quiet 30-something male just shaking his head with his eyes closed. It was a great experience.
I recommend getting this album along with "Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone" to get the full range of the band's sound. Also, visit their site, because it has some pretty funny and entertaining things:

Sound like "old U2"

Nice layers
My first impression of Walkmen was that they sounded like The Chameleons with Rod Stewart as singer. . I've really begun though to appreciate the layering of sounds within each song and come back to Bows and Arrows every few weeks.
