His best! Dixon's stand-up bass sounds amazing, as does Buddy Guy's guitar. Absolutely the best Muddy album I've heard.
Muddy really shows his smoothness & coolness on this album. This cd permanently resides in my player.
Incredible sound
Not technically, anyway. First off, this isn't really a DVD-Audio disc. It should play on all DVD players. It's DVD audio but it's not DVD-Audio, if you get my drift. It doesn't make the DVD-A indicator light up on my deck, in other words.
That out of the way. . . this is an incredible mastering job. I don't have the LP to compare it to, but I can't imagine it being much better. The dynamic range of this recording will make you jump out of your chair. Detail like you wouldn't believe. And the music ain't bad, either. :)
I got lucky as hell and found this for [. . . ] bucks in a local shop not long ago. It's worth $[. . . ] or whatever they're asking. It's that good.
don't let the title fool you
Muddy Waters style. It says folk singer, but it is straight blues. This is Muddy's attempt to cash in on the folk craze but he didn't sell out his music he just put a trendy title on it. waking the folk generation up to there roots. need I say more? this is a must own.
Muddy returns to Mississippi
But he recorded acoustic blues on Stovall's Plantation several years before heading for Chicago. Most people who are familiar with Muddy Waters know him as an electric urban blues artist.
This album is an acoustic recording that takes Muddy back to his pre-electric years. Here he handles a nice assortment of traditional and Chicago blues numbers. The singing is strong and the playing is appropriate to the roots style.
We often forget that many of the postwar Chicago musicians were country people who were raised on Mississippi farms. Muddy Waters shows here that he never forgot his roots.

One's of Muddy's Great Recordings
Along with the Newport Festival live set, and Muddy Sings Big Bill, you can't find any finer blues from this era. If you're just coming across Muddy for the first time, or you're venturing into his back catalog, this is clearly one of Muddy's all time great recordings. Ain't nobody who can come near these deeply felt waters. .
