Tapping folk music I bought this albulm for one particular song to sing and play with Elementary students at my school. If you're looking for old quality songs and lyrics, Doc Watson is a great source. The song is great fun and I'm not dissapointed one bit. It depends on what you want and what you're looking for, but these simple folk songs can be a great source for folk material.
You've Found It
"Matty Groves" is sheer perfection and this is the greatest version done by anyone including Fairport Convention. I have over 20 Doc Watson albums and this is the one I always come back to. The fingerpicking and the story are absolutely mesmirizing from beginning to end. "Georgie" and "Rovin' On a Winter's Night" are also beautiful. Last but not least I'd like to express my fondness for the opening a capella track, "Valley to Pray". Doc gets tons of recognition for his impeccable flatpicking and fingerpicking, but what about his voice? Doc has never sounded so good as on this record. Easily one of my all time favorite albums.
Words fail me.
While the style here is more English than Celtic, I get the same feeling when I listen to these songs. My parents are from the West of Ireland and I grew up in a house with very traditional Irish music and even older unaccompanied singing in either Irish or English. A Winter's Night is probably one of the most beautiful ballads I have ever heard and I just can't get it out of my head or stop singing it. There's something about sad songs that just washes the dirt off the soul. I really can't recommend, A Winter's Night, Georgie and Pretty Saro enough. This is truly a lovely album.
You have to hear Matty Groves
Matty Groves is a very good ballad alive with all the drama and tragedy of a good movie.
