Average album, superb reissue Growing up with that album and the band's 1989 follow-up Slip of the Tongue made listening to the band's early works a challenge. Like many people, I first discovered Whitesnake in 1987 when they released their smash hit self-titled album. It's a challenge that paid off though. I'm not a huge blues rock fan, but something about these early Whitesnake albums really works for me, and I've come to love them (almost) as much as the later albums I grew up with.
Originally released in 1981, Come An' Get It is the last Whitesnake album to feature guitarist Bernie Marsden. Unfortunately, it sounds a bit like the band was running out of steam at this point. David Coverdale still sounds great, but Marsden and Mick Moody just seem to chug along with the same tired blues and boogie riffs. The songwriting was getting repetitive as well. There are some better than average songs here ("Come An' Get It" and "Hit and Run", for example), but most of the songs on Come An' Get It sound like they were passed over during the Lovehunter recording sessions. Fortunately the band would get some new blood and new energy the following year with the excellent Saints & Sinners.
It's not one of the better examples of Whitesnake's early sound, but Come An' Get It is still a solid blues rock release and one that serious Whitesnake fans should check out. If you're new to the old school Whitesnake albums though, you're much better off starting with Saints & Sinners.
Edition Notes - Come An' Get It was reissued by EMI in 2007. The reissue features digitally remastered sound, expanded liner notes and a hefty six bonus tracks. The bonus tracks are rough mixes of "Child of Babylon", "Girl", "Come An' Get It", "Lonely Days, Lonely Nights" and "Till the Day I Die" plus a backing track version of "Hit and Run". The bonus tracks are interesting enough, but not really anything you'd need to hear more than once.
The real reason to buy this import reissue is the digitally remastered sound, which is far superior to the original release. EMI has been on fire lately with great sounding reissues (see: MSG, Scorpions, UFO and Saxon) and the Whitesnake reissues may be the best of the bunch. I'd probably give the album by itself 3 stars, but the reissue is easily worth a 4-star rating.
Amazing!
Many dont realize that Whitesnake had earlier recorrdings. . but they do and they are all amazing. I can go on and on about how great this CD is,,,,but just buy it and rock on!.
One of the best
This was just before they started their more commercial era and I tell you what this one finds it's way into my CD player just as much as the day I bought it. Hands down the best CD by this band. If you haven't discovered the other side of Whitesnake this is a good place to start. One word PHENOMENAL!.
WTF??
I had to go elsewhere to get it for the price it was really worth. I think Amazon needs to pay me some dividends!! When this first came out Amazon was listing this for a price of between $35 and $45. Now after paying $25 elsewhere, Amazon lists it for less than $20. What a rip off!!.
