Just discovered 11, which contains an exclusive live performance of Time Zones. I had never heard of Widespread Panic, until I picked up the local radio station's (Chicago WXRT) Christmas charity offering, OnXRT vol. I immediately began searching Amazon for their music and settled on this album as my entry into their music world.
I've seen reviews that say they sound like no one else. I have to differ. The lead singer reminds me of Jefferson Starship's Marty Balin and the band reminds me very much of JS's mid 70s album, Spitfire. Same "groovy" sound. If you played this for me back in 1979, I would have thought it was JS's next album.
I love the opening track "Second Skin" and "Time Zones". On several tracks John Bell seems to overreach and at times the band seems to lose focus, but it is not for very long and never seems to lose me on a song. An album I can see putting on at work and letting play all the way through, which with my iPod on shuffle, I do very seldom these days. Just makes me feel good while listening. Good upbeat music.
Worth a listen to for any fan of 70s psychedlic music. And definitely different than other bands of today.
What did he say?
But as usual with all WP CD's, I can't understand what in the world the lyrics mean. Love the music. Ruins it for me.
Widespread Rules!!
P. I recently crushed my foot(broken in several places) and have been recooperating with the help of W. Although I have been heavily medicated most of the time this is still some of the greatest music I have ever heard. I've been a Widespread fan for a while, but until recently I have only owned 3 of their CD's. In the last month I've purchased every CD they have. They just get better and better. I can't wait til I break something else!.
Wanna Dance?
Can't wait to see them live @ Langerado (3/11/07). Put this in your MP3 player, listens a while until it sinks in and let it move you.
Love this band, love this album!.
A pleaser!
Some people find it too twangy and off-key, but I think that gives it some extra charm. I love this album! I am a WP fan anyway, and in this album, the band takes on a fresh new direction. "Second Skin" is a wonderful song, but it took a few listens to grow on me; though I was instantly taken by the rest of the album (most notably "Ribs and Whiskey"). While I love the style of this album, I hope their next albums continue to reinvent and take on new creative directions, rather than follow in the country/bluegrass sound of this one.
This is an excellent CD for WP fans, and for music lovers! I can't wait to see the Earth to America tour this spring!.
