A Lesson in Music Appreciation It wasn't until my mid 20s that I had a chance to listen to the album in it's entirety and I am glad it took me that long because I don't think I could have appreciated the guts it took for Mason Williams to create such elaborate arrangements consisting of classical, pop, bossa nova, and rock with his own touch of humor here and there. Like many others, I first became aware of Mason Williams through his hit, "Classical Gas" while growing up listening to my dad's vinyl collection. The Mason Williams Phonograph Record is an album I think that was a head of it's time and being a musician myself, I find it difficult at times to let go of trying to create music that I think people will appreciate because it's popular as apposed to creating music that is "me". Thank you, Mason Williams! I found your album a true inspiration!.
A gem of the 60s
If you remember that year, this album will take you right back. One of the better pop albums that came out of the 60s, "The Mason Williams Phonograph Record" is a snapshot of the times. Sure, it probably sounds hokey if you do an apples-to-oranges comparison with today's pop, but back in '68 it was fresh, new and innovative. "Classical Gas" never gets old for me, but the other cuts all have something that gives the listener a glimpse into Williams' musical talents. I know, the "Princes Panties" and "Dylan Thomas" are a bit too cute for their own good, but "Baroque-A-Nova" and "Wanderlove" make up for them nicely. Williams' career never really took off, but he showed his chops nonetheless, and this album is a nice little package.
The 2008 MASON CD is GREAT!
The new MASON band is hot! Their style is fresh, their rhythms are sweet, and their songs have substance. Hey, this review is for the new MASON CD not the old Mason Williams music from the 60's. . . I especially like the raging guitar and keyboard work. The vocals have a special, unique quality that makes me feel like that this is truly original.
Get it, try it! You will find out how refreshing new music can be. . .
I know that MASON's live shows have more great instrumental jamming, 'cause I have seen a DVD of a recent show. . . It is pure entertainment. . . I can not wait to see them in person. . . !!!.
cool 60s period piece, A classical Gas!
show in the 60s. I remember Mason from the Smothers Bros. I bought this album when it was new!Its an odd album but really good. It captured the sound and feeling of much of popular music of the day. I love having it on c. d. it sounds sooo good. Its fun, great playing, and touching, always was. Mason made a great album here , its great to have it on a c. d. It is a classical Gas!.
Nostalgia of youth
I listened to it repeatedly because I liked the big orchestration on some of the tracks along with the pop sounding music. My parents had this album as an actual phonograph record when I was a young boy. Years later, after having played in many orchestras, jazz bands, and rock bands, I am still just as fond of the music on this album as I was decades ago.
