Wilson in her prime grooves with Shearing
In fact, this duo with Shearing, was my introduction to this young singer from Ohio. If one were to create a list of the best records that singer Nancy Wilson ever made, this and the colloboration with altoist Cannonball Adderly would be one of them. From "The Things We Did Last Summer" to "My Gentlemen Friend", Nancy has never sounded better than ever before the onstages of commercialism took a toll on her once glorious voice. You won't hear any of the vibrato or forced blues mannerisms that are now part and parcel of the current Wilson--so rejoice in these beautiful sides!!.

A Resounding Applause
" ~ Liner Notes (original LP release, 1961) ~

While this is not my first exposure to George Shearing's incredible piano artistry having collected a few of his remarkable recordings, this is my very first Nancy Wilson album. "This album came about because of a rare thing called mutual admiration, growing out of some impromptu fun sessions about a year ago when George and his group were appearing at New York's Basin Street East-- Nancy sat in and they took off. It was recorded between June 1960 and January 1961 with George Shearing Quintet namely Dick Garcia on guitar, Warren Chaisson on vibes, Ralph Pena on bass, Vernell Fournier on drums and Armando Pareza on percussion.

This collaboration between George Shearing and multi-Grammy awardee Nancy Wilson is one of the best things that ever happened to jazz music. Sir George Shearing is an institution. His name is a byword to jazz aficionados who appreciate great piano playing. Nancy Wilson possesses one of the loveliest voices the jazz world has ever heard. And together they have made beautiful music together and this recording is a proof. They both shine in all of their performances and every track is a showcase of each other's creativity and wealth of experience on how to interpret a song or a tune in the most memorable fashion by stamping their own signature styles to each rendition.

For the best cuts, listen closely to "The Nearness of You," "The Things We Did Last Summer" and "On Green Dolphin Street" where you can truly appreciate Ms. Wilson's versatility and incredible vocal flair. Likewise, you'll also be delighted with Sir George's all-instrumental renditions of "Wait Till You See Her," "Oh! Look At Me Now" and his very own composition and signature tune, "Lullaby of Birdland. "

Buy this classic CD and treat yourself to one of the best vocal and instrumental jazz albums ever produced. . . you'll be glad you did.

With my heartfelt recommendation, and Happy Listening!

A Delightful Capitol Records Pairing!
Nancy holds a Shearing lp and George holds Nancy's album. Dig that cover. They mutally admired one another and they went and recorded a terrific album. There are a few solo cuts from Shearing so, it's a little misleading that all the tunes are duets, but that being said, their duets are dynamite. I am crazy about their version of , "The Things We Did Last Summer". Capitol teamed up Shearing with Peggy Lee and Dakota Stanton, the Wilson/Shearing one is my favorite. Pick it up and join in in the swinging!.

An Incomparable Recording.....
I've always been a fan of the mellow jazz sounds of the quintet and this pairing was perfect. Nancy Wilson with the George Shearing Quintet provides the best of both worlds. Nancy Wilson always had perfect enunciation to go with a voice that was clear and crisp without being strident and George is well known over the years for his knowledgeable backing of vocalists and making such collaborations truly memorable!

I would have bought the cd for "On Green Dolphin Street" alone since it's a personal favorite. I also dig her vocals on "The Things We Did Last Summer", "Born To Be Blue", and "The Nearness Of You". The Shearing "sound" is great throughout but I particuarly enjoy the nostalgic "I Remember Clifford", Benny Golson's "Whisper Not", "Blue Lou" and of course, "Lullaby Of Birdland".

Anyone would enjoy this album, but especialy, fans of George Shearing or Nancy Wilson, or those who appreciate terrific small group light jazz!.
