Great listening for many years --- past and future The Adderley Brothers with Nancy Wilson? Fugitaboutit!! I remember seeing Cannonball at the Temple University summer jazz series at Ambler, near Philly. This isn't a particularly complex collection of music but it certainly is elegant. I was a student at the University of Delaware at that time and was into rock, soul and R&B. They converted me to jazz and I've never looked back. This is a timeless piece of music so add it to your collection and enjoy!!.
Good enough, but there is an even better CD of hers...
I think George's instrument and style suit her voice better, and the song selection is better. I like Nancy and Cannonball, but their duet LP is one star below the one she did with pianist George Shearing. Here, she is wonderful on "A Sleepin' Bee" and on "Happy Talk" from "South Pacific" but I was less satsified with the other selections. Both "Save Your Love For Me" and "I Never Will Marry" feature lyrics that just don't inspire me to push "repeat. " The Adderley Quintet seems subdued on the tracks which feature Nancy's vocals, but they get lots of time to shine on the instrumental selections. I never owned many Nancy records over the years, but I suspect that she has several studio albums available which would be more satisfying overall than this effort.
A Keeper
In fact, she's lost it twice, so I've recently bought it for her again for the third time. My teenage step-daughter is an aspiring jazz vocalist who can't live without this CD.
TWO GREAT JAZZ ARTISTS AT THEIR PEAK
PERUSING THE JAZZ ALBUMS, I CAME ACROSS THIS CD, PICKED IT UP, PUT IT DOWN AND LEFT THE STORE. I WAS IN A STORE THAT SELLS CD'S YESTERDAY. ON A WHIM, I WENT BACK THERE TODAY AND PURCHASED THE CD. SOMETHING COMPL=ELLED ME TO DIT, AND BOY AM I GLAD I GAVE IN TO MY INSTINCTS. THIS IS A WONDERFUL CD. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THE VOICE OF NANCY WILSON, HER VOICE LENDS A SENSE OF STYLE AND SOPHISTICATION TO HER MUSIC. CANNONBALL ADDERLY IS A SEMINAL FIGURE IN THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF JAZZ MUSIC. AND HIS BAND IS GREAT, TOO, WITH HIS BROTHER NAT ON TRUMPET, JOE ZAWINUL ON KEYBOARDS, SAM JONES ON BASS AND LOUIS HAYES ON DRUMS (SAME BAND AS ON THE ALBUM "MERCY, MERCY, MERCY"). .
Great recording!
Cannonball and his quintet with brother Nat are my jazz heroes. Nancy Wilson has been my favorite singer for years. You mix them and. . . . yes! Pure delight!.
