The real blues...
I agree, and that's why I think it's one of his very best works. Many have noted that Johnny is sounding old and tired on this album. What you hear is the long life of a bluesman making up for lost energy with focus and reflection. You should love this album. .

A Must only for the dedicated Johnny loyalist

Johnny has been my favorite musician since I was in high school. I waited almost a year after buying this to write a review. I've been listening to his music and going to his shows since 1973 and have just about all his authorized CD's. I bought this one with some anticipation (and trepidation) after seeing the last two live shows I've been to. I was excited about a new release after such a long wait, but wondered how it would measure up after the last two shows I had seen. They had their magical moments, but overall they were disappointing because of Johnny's physical decline, with weak vocals and to a lesser extent, sloppy playing. It's possible that I hit two "off" shows, but after this album, I'm not so sure.

I love the guy and his music and can't fault him for aging, but I have to agree with several other reviewers here that the vocals on this one are disappointing, mostly thin and weak, even excruciating at times. Johnny's playing has slowed down over the years, but when he's on, he can still rock that guitar with the best of them. If this album had been a little shorter and more instrumental, that would have improved it. It's painful to hear that once powerful growling voice feel its way for the higher register, often barely attaining or missing the mark. It seems that the consistency of vocal quality from track to track is poor, for some of the vocals are stronger, especially in the lower and middle registers. Sometimes he can still nail it.

Because of this, I can't really recommend the album as a "must have" for any but the most dedicated Johnny fan. If you are still discovering Johnny, you'd do best to stick to Live in NYC '97 and releases before that, especially from the '70's. He hit another peak with the blues releases from the early '90's, and they are excellent choices too. .

back to the roots
for having age and health issues, he lets it rip on this cd. johnny steps back into the blues roots with this release. he is still amazing.

Go Johnny go
Stop whining you nit-pickers. Thank God he is still making music. Great stuff, Johnny has aged well and his music still will put to shame most wanna-be blues out there today. My favorites: I Smell Smoke and Shakedown. Kick butt bass on both tracks too, crank it up. Go Johnny go!.

JOHNNY'S BACK!!!
He had his legendary chops and his legendary "Johnny growl. I just saw Johnny Winter, in concert TONIGHT (1/11/2007) on his first date of his 2007 tour and this man shreaded. " I've loved Johnny Winter since the early 70's and I am sad to say that I had almost forgotten about this blues master. I've been playing guitar, full-time professionally for thirty years and after seeing Johnny play tonight I don't feel like ever picking my guitar up again. Yes, I was a little worried when I saw his band walk him out and help him sit down to play. But, once he put his fingers on the strings he was the same Johnny Winter I had always known and loved. Age has taken its toll on his body, but his fingers were lightening fast his lick blisteringly tasteful and when they brought out his legendary Gibson Firebird and pinky slide he WAS in his prime. The man is a master and untouchable as a blues guitarists. Seeing Johnny tonight made Stevie Ray Vaughn (God rest his soul, and he would probably agree with me if he saw Johnny tonight) still in his adolescent days of working towards blues master. Johnny Winter rocked Virginia Beach tonight and defied everything you saw in his diminished physical state. No one can touch Johnny Winter today as a blistering blues guitarist, he was the total master of guitar tonight and created an energy that I've never seen matched by another blues guitarist with the stamina that Johnny possessed tonight.
