Winter's best album And the recording is actually quite good, the CD sounds better than the old vinyl record which I also owned. If you were to own just one this is the one to get. And Derringer (Hang on Sloopy) is also a very good guitarist.
Johnny Winter Fan.
Great music by one of the best Blues/Rock guitarists. I had this as an LP and lost it.
Great Material
Several of these songs are also on the Greatest Hits cd and sound twice as clean as they do on this recording. Great material but I wish they would do something with the recording. .
WOW!!!
There's an incredible aggressiveness in it, but there's also a lot of blues. Johnny Winter has such an incredible style of guitar playing. Johnny Winter usually uses a thumb pick and his other fingers. His sound reminds me of really good cheeseburgers, grilled over a fire.
The album really brings out Johnny Winter during his best years. Although his first band, with Tommy Shannon (later Stevie Ray Vaughan's bass player), "Uncle" John Turner, and Johnny's brother (Edgar Winter, also very well-known), might have bigger names, this band includes Johnny Winter's match, Rick Derringer also on guitar.
The album begins with the classic "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" done with a lot of energy. I love Johnny Winter's voice as well as his guitar playing. That's followed with a slow-blues "It's My Own Fault" which is one of the biggest blues classics. It also includes a big long jam, which is spectacular.
"Jumpin' Jack Flash" is one of the highlighting points of the album. I actually think that this is even better than the original version because it includes an actual guitar solo. How can you have a killer guitar riff without there being a guitar solo? Johnny also plays the riff better than Keith Richards. That's followed by a big medley of a few proto-rock classics, "Long Tall Sally," "Great Balls of Fire," and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On. " You would think that that would be the grand finale, and it might have. However, it's not the final track.
"Mean Town Blues," the only original tune on the album, has a nice long jam, and Johnny Winter's playing is great as usual. The album ends, however, with the national anthem for blues-influenced guitarists, "Johnny B. Goode. " Johnny Winter also brings out a lot of great guitar playing.
If you don't buy this album, someone should really hunt you down and kill you. Also, it costs seven dollars plus tax and shipping. That's very affordable, and you get a lot more than the worth of the money. This album is a lot better than some of the albums that I have been willing to pay fifteen dollars for. It's a great deal, and a brilliantly marvelous album.
