Vimyls, vinyls, vinyls I have more vinyl than at least a hundred houses with vinyl flooring. You know, I mentioned in another review about all the vinyls I still have. I am not bragging, I merely mention this fact because there are a lot vinyl collectors out there. That brings me to the Yardbirds. I have all domestic singles on Epic, I almost had one import, but, they withdrew "Goodnight Sweet Josephine" b/w "Think About It" in Britain for some reason. It was released over here on Epic, what happened? I love everyone of these singles. From the days of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck to the days of Jimmy Page. What a Group! What a sound! I loved "For Your Love", but, what really turned me on about this group was "Shapes of Things". It was those lyrics, that guitar solo and that Keith Relf voice. Truly amazing! However, I do not care too much for the reunions of the Yardbirds. Sorry guys,Keith is gone - Clapton,Beck and Page pretty much have nothing to do with any of it and the sound is just not the same. But,the original recordings, they are by far,the masterpiece classics.
Yeah, yet again --
So when will the repackaging and recycling of it cease? How about simply sticking to the original catalog and leave out all the extra-track junk?
It isn't complicated: release each album as originally issued, with the singles included when not already on the album, either before or after the album tracks depending on when released. The recordings are as good as they ever were.
We really don't need all the extra junk that the band itself had the sense to discard. One doesn't burnish a "legend" by tarnishing it, any more than all the raves about Clapton's guitar playing will make it as great as the Clapton-zombies want it to have been.
Clapton's guitar playing was notable _in Britain_ as being superior to _some_ other British guitarists _in Britain_. His "innovations" were _maybe_ innovations (standard blues riffs are "innovations"?) _in Britain_; they were not new in the US, from which he got it all.
Is there something inherently "innovative" about the blues form itself, which has been around by now for at least 100 years? No. About slavishly copying it, as did Clapton with The Yardbirds? No.
The only "innovation" -- and this especially in the US -- is that white kids would listen to guitar licks, which were new to _them_, when played by a white, while avoiding hearing the same licks when played, before Clapton got his first guitar, by blacks. It wasn't that Clapton was "God" -- the licks weren't his; it was that he was white, thus making it acceptable for white kids to listen to his retreads.
