Two great original songs, but mostly the old chestnuts
Dwight then revives the old Chuck Berry classic, Run run Rudolph, and there's nobody of Dwight's generation better suited to this song. Dwight opens this album with the title track, a great original bluesy song about being depressed in September but looking forward to some Christmas cheer. Silver bells, another song of fifties origin, has long been one of my favorite Christmas standards. Dwight's distinctive version features Beth Andersen, who provides harmonies. Dwight again stamps his own identity on the classic ballads, I'll be home for Christmas and Silent night. Not that any of these standards stray far from the original arrangements, but Dwight does enough to make sure that you know he's not just another singer of the same old songs.

Another fifties song follows, this being Santa Claus is back in town, which Leiber and Stoller song was first popularized by Elvis Presley and to which Dwight is ideally suited. The Christmas song, Away in a manger and Here comes Santa Claus all provide further evidence of Dwight's ability to take well-known classics and make them sound a little different while retaining the basic familiar sound. Finally, the album closes with Dwight's second original song, Santa can't stay, which provides an interesting perspective on modern family life.

Although I am a huge fan of Dwight's music, I wasn't really sure that I wanted this particular album, but I'm glad that the price tempted by me. Yes, there are a lot of old standards here, but Dwight has managed to inject new life into them without trying to re-interpret them in a radically different way. And quite apart from them, this would be worth it for the two original songs if you haven't got them already on a multi-artist Christmas compilation. It's a real bargain at the price.

Yoakam Sets The Christmas Tree On Fire


Yoakam spins the Bakersfield sound, soul, jazz and swing into songs like "Silver Bells," "The Christmas Song" and "I'll Be Home For Christmas. Blending his distinctive twang with standards such as "Away In A Manger" and pop Christmas tunes like "Run, Run Rudolph," Dwight Yoakam proves that even sophisticated country artists can make a cool Christmas album. " Guitarist supreme Pete Anderson tears up rockabilly numbers like "Santa Claus Is Back In Town. " Along with the rest of his band, Yoakam brings on top performers such as Beth Anderson, Ricky Skaggs, the brilliant Eddie Shaver and Marty Rifkin.

Two original tunes are also included, those being the bluesy "Come On Christmas" and the funny, redneck-drenched "Santa Can't Stay. "

Personal favorites include "Run, Run Rudolph," "Santa Can't Stay" and Yoakam's eclectic rendition of "Here Comes Santa Claus. "

With big horns, accordians, dobros, electric guitars and plenty of twang, Dwight Yoakam's spin on Christmas tunes is simply wonderful. The bottomline is this: a) If you like Yoakam's music, you'll love this album and b) if you're tired of traditional sounding Christmas tunes, this is the album to snag. Highly recommended.


Goodies Under your Tree from Dwight!!
This really deserves to be complemented by a Volume 2, but meanwhile I'll play this over and over. I love this album because Dwight's personality comes through, along with his amazing vocals and diverse musical stylings (rockabilly, country, jazz). I especially enjoy "Away in a Manger," "Silver Bells," "I'll Be Home for Christmas," "The Christmas Song," "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Run Run Rudolph" and "Santa Can't Stay. " I consider the latter to be a new modern classic for the holidays. It's a tongue-in-cheek original composition by Dwight who sings it with appropriate gusto. Bottom line, this album is a real quality effort, NOT an obligatory or ho hum affair.

I would have given this 5 stars but the first song is slow and depressing. Dwight brings the Christmas spirit to you via this CD. Who starts off a CD with a slow song? Anyway, the rest of the music is great and creative and it is priced right.
