Freedom
The critics gave this album positive reviews and Allmusic, Rollinstones and Robert Christgau all gave this 4 or better. Freedom being Young's 1989 release and many felt that this was his best release since his 1979 release Rust Never Sleeps. I think this is a very good release but I will give it a 4 since I do not find it to be among his best work. The booklet has all the lyrics included and for every track we get a listing of whom plays what. Tracks that standout are Don't Cry and the two renditions of Rockin' in the free world. In the center of the booklet we also get a poster of Young with a guitar looking pensive. 4/5.

ALTHOUGH NEIL HAS A WIDE VARIETY OF MUSIC TYPES OR GENRES IF YOU LIKE. THIS IS CLOSE TO MY FAVOURITE,WITH THE BOOKEND TRACKS OF ROCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD,BOTH ACOUSTIC,AND ELECTRIC (GUESS IT DEPENDS ON YOUR MOOD AS TO WHICH IS PREFERABLE).
CRIME IN THE CITY CREATES A PICTURE OF LIFE IN MOST BIG CITIES AROUND THE WORLD. . . ALL MUSO'S WILL RELATE TO THAT PASSAGE "FIND ME A SONGWRITER,MAKE SURE HE'S HUNGRY,AND ALONE,ETC. "
THEN GET READY FOR SOME WAILING GUITARS IN HIS STRONG BALLAD "DON'T CRY",GREAT STUFF!!
ONE OF MY FAVOURITE LADIES,LOVELY LINDA RONSTADT,HELPS OUT ON A COUPLE OF BALLADS,"THE WAYS OF LOVE' AND "HANGIN'ON A LIMB",BOTH GOOD QUALITY TRACKS.
EL DORADO CONJURES UP AN IMAGE OF CENTRAL AMERICA,WHICH,AS IN NEIL AND CRAZY HORSES "CORTEZ THE KILLER" DOESN'T PAINT A GOOD PICTURE OF LIFE IN SPANISH TERRITORIES. DON'T GET ME WRONG THIS IS A TOP TRACK.
OVERALL,YOU GET TERRIFIC VALUE FOR MONEY HERE,IF YOU ARE NEW TO NEIL YOUNG,GET THIS. . . IT WILL NOT DISSAPOINT!!.


Freedom--9 Years, But Still Strong
What I had then was a cassette player, and this album was the ultimate travel buddy. Found this album (cassette) at a used music store while traveling in Asia some 9 years ago. Though I have bought the CD version now, I still keep the old one for good old times' sake. This is one of my favorites. In the mellow and melancholy theme, I can still see the landscapes of India and South East Asia vividly when I listen to this album. "Rockin' in the Free World" needs no introduction--in fact, I heard this song at Lollapalooza '07 performed by some kids (maybe 13-yr olds). That brings to mind, how Neil Young's music has transcended generations.
Every track is excellent: "Crime in the City," "Don't Cry," "Someday," "Hangin' on a Limb," "Eldorado," "On Broadway," "No More," and "Wrecking Ball. " And "The Ways of Love" and "Too Far Gone" are Neil Young's nuggets.
Overall, a soft and sweet 5-star album. .

What can you say? Neil Young is a hungover hippie, a great poet, environmentalist, great musician, and a music LEGEND! This C. is GREAT for that time period (1989/1990). Mr. Young always has alot to say in his songs and this disc doesn't disappoint.
In my opinion, "Live Rust" is his best album. But, "Freedom" will really speak to you in this post 9/11 America.

Good songs, inferior performances
While I can appreciate the quality of the lyrics and melodies of some of the songs especially the ballads, the ensemble playing of the uptempo tunes sound monotonous and not very diverse from one another. This, for me, is a very exasperating album to listen to. The performances of Young's back-up band are pedestrian: the drumming and bass-playing sounds so uninspired. It's possible that even Young may have had some misgivings over the sessions because he seems to have tried to salvage the work in the production process. It doesn't really help much.
