Light this on fire.
We all know that - switch on music television and you get bombarded with hateful music. Bad songs are everywhere. That's nothing new. But sometimes, just sometimes. . you hear something that is so BAD, so downright AWFUL, that it truly takes your breath away.

Will Young's attempt at "Light My Fire?" You guessed it - that's one of those rare songs.

Will Young, then. You probably haven't heard of him in America (where, as a previous idiot said on here - you like "manly voices like Justin Timberlake. " Someone get this kid a spot on TV - The greatest comedian in the world couldn't have come up with that), but he was our first Pop Idol, and has actually did the impossible and is still, like, around.

I'm not a music snob and I'll take anything at face value. Will Young, talented vocalist he may be, has never been, nor ever will be, my "bag. " That's not to say he isn't a cut above the rest of the fodder that trundles through the Reality Television Road To Hell, but the day The Curmudgeon buys a Will Young CD will never happen.

Anyway, enough prattle - let's talk about what is quite simply one of the worst singles, and certainly one of the worst cover versions - of all time. The Doors "Light My Fire" is a brooding, smouldering sexually tinged classic. Jim Morrison was a true original, and (if the movie was to be believed) not for commercialising his music. So he must have been spinning like a tornado when he heard his music being butchered like this - and by the winner of a TV talent show.

To say this sounds nothing like the original is a hilarious understatement. Cover versions, of course, should sound different than the original (if not - what's the point?) and you should always inject a bit of yourself into the song - but what Will Young has injected is pure ear bleeding poison.

A feeble, slow drumbeat. A whiney, girly voice. A barely there rhythm. At best - it's just boring. At worst - it's damn insulting.

But of course, the purists and real music fans were up in arms, but of course - because he was on reality television The Scum bought it in droves and it was number one. Same old story. That's nothing new; Hell, when it comes to these brainless morons you could release a ringtone and it would get to number one. . . . oh, wait - that already happened.

So - Will Young. Went on to big things over here in The UK. According to a recent poll (conducted by - oh oh. . the public) Will Young is the greatest British male solo artist of all time. But he's already struck out twice on here, the Official Room 101 of Amazon. com.

Disgraceful
I am being generous by giving 2 stars instead of 1 because this version of "Light My Version" gets every single aspect of the classic wrong. At least the single is tolerable and pleasant.

While it is understandable that artists will want to interpret songs differently, Will Young practically destroyed all traces of Jim Morrison with his cover. I don't know why he chooses to sing "Light My Fire" as if it were some nice love song. Perhaps his weak vocals can't handle the aggressiveness or senusality of the original or he wants to tone down the suggestiveness of the lyrics. Either case, it's a bad, bad idea. Also, it's a bad, bad idea to completely eliminate the guitar solo, obliterate the psychedelic elements of the song, and to change the lyrics around. Did Will Young do any research on the Doors or Jim Morrison????? The least he could do is respect the original!

Fellow readers, take a listen to the one and only "Light My Fire" by The Doors. It's far better by comparison. If you find the original song old and boring, then ignore this review.

I'm a Doors fan
Only Doors fans will agree with me. This single must very simply be outlawed. If you like Britney Spears or Backstreet Boys, you will not agree.

Listen to the strings
Will takes great inspiration from Jose Feliciano's previous interpretation. The first time I heard Will I was watching "Top of the Pops" on BBCAmerica, and he absolutely blew me away. Although I must say that the live version from Top of the Pops does great justice to the studio cut, and it would be a great idea if the live version gets realeased as a b-side with a future single. When you hear it, listen to the string arrangement, it will blow you away. I have it recorded on my DVR and I don't think I will ever erase it. Thanks Will for that moment.

A great nostalgia trip for Pop Idol fans
Will showcases his soulful voice, and versatality, as he sings almost-latin style on Light My Fire, and big band-style on Beyond the Sea. Will breaks no new ground with this record, as we have heard him sing all 3 songs on Pop Idol, but it is a great collection nevertheless. A must for all Pop Idol fans, as it brings back memories of at least 3 shows (the #1-themed show, the songs from films-themed show, and the big band show).
Will Young is a pleasant change from the talentless, personality-less singers we normally see in our charts, and this is a must for all fans.
