the rave reviews are justified
After reading the powerfully positive reviews here I just purchased it. As a long time Zappa fan, this album strangely has never come across my path. Think of this as a more sophisticated and lush sounding Hot Rats. Buy it now!!!!! .

BIG Band Zappa
If you don't like Zappa's vocal works then this is probably the one for you. Zappa plays jazz and brings and incredible ensemble along for the ride. Beautiful big band harmonies with zero filler. Simply phenomenal. The man was ahead of his time.

A bit overdeveloped
I personally find the second side much more connectable then the first's show-offs which often do not necessarily lead anywhere with musical meaning. 3 1/2

Putting his instrumental arranging abilities to the test, Zappa proves he can safely be labeled the Mingus of rock, offering a chiefly voiceless, whirlwind fusion trip that is certainly not without compositional excess. While it could have been a brilliant album from the brave anti-traditionalist icon, I will settle for startlingly good.

My Kind of Zappa
Of the three early-70s primarily instrumental albums, "The Grand Wazoo" features the biggest band and perhaps the most relaxed sound. This album comes out of my collection and onto my CD player or iPod playlist every few years, and it never disappoints. Unlike other Zappa albums, this one is almost gimmick-free. Everything you hear on it seems to have been put there purely for musical value. The one song with lyrics, "For Calvin" does have some distorted and exaggerated vocal stylings, but as is sometimes the case with Zappa, they work beautifully here. Elsewhere, you'll hear some fantastic guitar work from Zappa, incredible electric piano work from George Duke, lots of fabulous horns especially Sal Marquez on trumpet. There is a merry sense of humor throughout much of this record, but there's a rare, for Zappa, lightness about it. No rants, no Brechtian confrontations, no strained nods to Varese -- just purely original, enjoyable music. .

Little Acknowledged Zappa Classic
I especially enjoy "Blessed Relief" which takes me back to those musically experimental, latter days of high school (1972-74). Perhaps it was only nostalgia that made me purchase this CD, but I've never forgotten its jazzy melodies. I can count this album as one of a handful that formed the basis of my appreciation of jazz.
