Where's the rest of this concert? Where's the rest of this song and where's the rest of this concert. Frank is wailing at the end of Muffin Man as the album fades out. This is a jamming, blistering performance by the master. Please re-release with the bonus tracks! Thanks! Zappa rules.
Solid Zappa
It is mostly live taken from a concert (or mostly likely series of concerts knowing Zappa's affinity for splicing tape) in 1975. This is a very good album by Zappa with a little help from Captain Beefheart. The musicianship is topnotch as is the case with most every Zappa recording. . . Beefheart's nonsensical "beat" poetry can be off-putting but taken with a touch of satire works well. If you are a Zappa fan already then this is a purchase you will enjoy, that said this is not an album I would use to get someone introduced to Zappa. .
Great Live Zappa
(Not that I'm old enough to have experienced either). "Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy" is reason enough to buy this CD-- the line "She put a Doobie Brothers tape on/I had a Roger Daltry cape on" pretty much sums up the dating and rock scene in the 1970's in hilarious fashion. Also, the spoken word interludes by Captain Beefheart are well-placed and surprisingly entertaining. I'm not sure this is as good a Zappa starting point as Over-Nite Sensation (which would be the definitive "introductory" Zappa album, unless you want to start chronologically), but if you already think you like Zappa, buy this one. .
Bitchen collection
The lyrics are typically satirical, bizarre, funny and in a rare instance, nostalgic (Cucamonga). The songs are catchy and definitely rock. FZ's guitar solos are fiery and focused. Beefheart's singing, reciting and maniac harmonica playing are otherworldly. The rest of the Mothers' musicianship is nothing short of stellar. And Kerry McNabe does a bitchen' job of mixing the live cuts with the studio cuts.
Zappa and Beefheart. What a perfect musical combination. Once again indicating (to me at least) that the universe may not be as random or indifferent as some people might think.
DARK AND BITCHIN'
I first heard it when I was 15 and became a fan ever since!
This is simply the best live album ever. This was the first Zappa album I ever bought. (even with the supplemental
studio additions) The whole overall disc has a dark magic to it.
And a charm that no other album has. Cucamonga is a wonderful studio
track amid the live stuff! All the solos are AWESOME! And
Debra Kedabra is the most terrifying song EVER! Spine chilling in it's
feverishness!
Turn this disc up and listen to it with some volume and it will
explode from the speakers! You'll get the "live feel"
and it will all sound so "immediate. "
Some have said this album sounds too uneven. What do they mean by that!!? All Zappa albums are "all-over-the-map" full of "dada"
variety!! Those people haven't heard much Zappa. GET this cd and
have a great aural adventure!!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
