An Interesting Artifact On the plus side you hear different lesser know stuff much of which is improvised on the spot. Recorded in 1972 at various venues this is a good documentaion of Zappa'a instumental jazz/rock big band of that period. Unfortunately the recording is only average and somewhat muddy, which is not surprising for that time. Still, if you are a Zappa fan it is definately worth getting this one.

Greatness still unfolding
Six long instrumentals prove once again that Frank Zappa was the greatest guitar player of the 20th century, backed here with an incendiary Horn Section. Great Googly Moogly!!! The Man is dead and still the momentous collections keep on coming! The Vault-Keeper is in now charge of new releases, has taste and style, 1972 rarely sounded so good. Buy This NOW, you'll thank me later. What's the secret word tonight, Frank?.
All I can say is "Amen!"
I've over 70 FZ CDs . I just want to add that all of the folks saying what terrific instrumental work this is are telling the absolute truth. . . and I say . . . buy this and enjoy it! .
It was something he was missing
He's been collecting for a few years and said this was something he had been looking for, but was unable to find. This was bought for my nephew, who wants to collect everything Frank Zappa has done. This might make it a good idea for someone who's got a Zappa fan they need to buy a gift for. .
Great CD that fills a gap in Zappa's discography
This, on the other hand, is a very worthy addition to any Zappa fan's collection. Some of the releases of Zappa's material since FZ's death have been disappointing, and few are really indispensable.
This is the "Petit Wazoo" band that did a brief tour in late 1972. This is an important addition to the catalog, because this is the first real release from that band. (A previous release consisted of rehearsals from 1972). It's interesting that this period is not represented AT ALL in the 6 double-CD series "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" (perhaps 1 song!)
It's basically a smaller version of the band that recorded "Waka Jawaka" and "Grand Wazoo". It features a horn section of top LA area jazz musicians. Most notably Bill Watrous on trombone is featured on a couple of great solos. Zappa's guitar work is excellent throughout, his style starting to resemble his mid-70's sound.
Several of the tunes are bluesy jams. The CD also features several compositions that were new at the time, various parts of which appeared in different form on "Greggary Peccary", "Bebop Tango", "Cucamonga", etc. True Zappa freaks will appreciate the "conceptual continuity" clues.
Buy this now!
P. S. Wazoo released in 2007, features a concert by the full Grand Wazoo big band from 1972. Amazon is now selling that item. Both are great additions to any Zappa collection! Get both! .
