As delicate and lovely as a setting sun Apparently, they're friends with The Zephyrs, and Rachel Goswell (of Mojave 3) provides guest vocals on what, for me, is this album's most outstanding track, "Setting Sun. I first heard about this on recommendation from some friends who knew how much I love Mojave 3. " A little alt-country, a little shoegazer, The Zephyrs carve an emotional space filled with melody, longing, sadness and occasional pathos. It gives me hope that there may be more good ones out there yet. The sky WILL come down -- and it will be be beautiful. I saw them on Mogwai's (my favorite band) website, I heard Stargazer, and I was hooked. This is my new favorite album. It pisses me off that music this sophisticated and gorgeous isn't released in the states. Whenever I listen to When The Sky Comes Down. . . , I feel like I'm driving through the country at night, when the stars are out and I'm the only one on the road. Some of the songs remind me of a non-Icelandic, folky version of Sigur Ros. But this music is 10 times more personal than Sigur Ros will ever be. Buy this album, especially with the bonus tracks; "Urges" is one of the best songs on the album. Although they're on Mogwai's Rock Action label, The Zephrys sound nothing like them--they posses some of their beautiful, ambient qualities perhaps, but they have their own unique sound. I've never heard anything like The Zephyrs. I urge you to make When The Sky Comes Down. . . a part of your collection. It'll make you feel hopeful, even through your worst days. Standout tracks: Setting Sun, The Green Tree, Paint Your House, Murder Of A Small Man, Urges, and of course Stargazer. An incredible listening experience. Sadness Sadness and beauty are combined as perfectly as in the greatest songs of Mogwai, Piano Magic or Bark Psychosis. One of the best albums I have listened this year, and maybe one of the best albums I have listened in years.
