Who Killed......The Zutons? You know the kind; annoying accents, poppy music. The Zutons are the kind of British punk band that I hate. . . everything just seems so overdone. They're kind of like The Kooks, but with an insistant, obnoxious saxophone that definately seems out of place in just about every song. With their debut album, they somehow managed to captivate audiences across the pond, reaching number 9 on the U. K. album charts. Although mostly undheard of in the United States, they were featured in Rolling Stones' 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Although this review may suggest otherwise, not all of the songs on the album were unlistenable. It starts off okay with "Zuton Fever," which is bareable, but I don't think I've listened to it since I bought the album. Track two was the only song I still listen to, and probably the band's most popular song to date: "Pressure Point. " But after this point, it drags on until the last track, originally not on the album, "Don't Ever Think (To Much). " So three decent songs out of thirteen? Why waste your money.
Decent Album, but they are much better live!!!
The live performances were excellent and left me wondering why I hadn't heard of them before. I bought this cd after hearing half a dozen live songs through their televised performances at the 2008 Isle of Wight, V Fest, and some other large European festival.
Well, the answer is that this, their first album and the only one that was released in the U. S. (as far as I can tell) leaves a bit to be desired. There are several songs on here that are absolutely killer ("You Will, You Won't" being a head and shoulders stand out), but for the most part the recording makes the group sound very average.
I have now downloaded both of their other albums and they are much better (and sound much more like the band does live). They are a great band, I just wouldn't recommend this whole album unless you already have the other two and need to complete your set. .
Great Catchy Tunes
I bought it based off some other excellent reviews (Ben Folds said he liked it) and it looked like a good chance to take. This CD offers a lot of fun easy-listening british pop style music. I don't regret it at all. The Zutons have a great self-deprecating sense of humor, and their music reflects their general light view of life.
The CD offers a great selection of foot-tapping head-nodding cheerful tunes that will make any day a little brighter.
A Suprise Addition to bands I will Follow
Anyways, this quickly became a regular in my rotation, and I am looking forward to buying the rest of their albums. I bought this CD from another site because I had to meet a minimun for free shipping.
The trumpet is awesome, and oddly enough was not originally part of the line up. The Zutons are a bouncy, fun indie rock band. You will find yourself getting their songs stuck in your head after just a few listens. I can only imagine how great they would be live.

Catch that weird funky fever!
Released in 2004, their debut album is heap of hidden goodies- there's the irresistible surf-pop-punk pastiche "Zuton Fever," which features a ridiculously catchy melody, great group anthem lyrics, and a wonderfully cheesy plastic saxophone. The Zutons seem destined to go down as nothing more than a footnote in the musical history of this decade (and even less than that in the overall history of rock 'n' roll), but they deserve better: Their mixture of punk, R&B, psych revival, surf rock, and whatever else comes to mind is fun, refreshing, and (pretty) original, especially since its seasoned with a campy, smart, and unmistakable Britishness. "You Will You Won't" and "Pressure Point" are stomping, fun (if not entirely convincing) funk-punk workouts, while "Nightmare Pt. 2" is a surreal bit of post-psychedelia. "Havana Gang Brawl" is a tense, relentless, and bouncy slab of atmosphere, while "Railroad" is a pretty and odd ballad. No, it's not a work of genius- the album's energy does drag in places, and the songs don't always hit their mark, but it is a lot of fun- give 'er a whirl.
