wont you come on over valerie.....great cd. . I'm going to have to buy more of the zutons. Very riff centric voicings and phrasings, love it.
Great Band!!
I thought they sounded great and ordered a copy of "Tired of Hanging Around". First saw the Zutons on Palladia TV playing one of the festivals. Like it so much I ended up ordering "You Can Do Anything" and "Who Killed. . . . . . the Zutons". Being an old rock guitarist, the first thing that caught my ear was the wealth of great guitar tones. Everything from beautiful clean to tube amp crunch. Catchy songs with great lyrics, great raspy vocals, tight rythm section and great saxophone fills. The Zutons are like a really great musical soup! If you want to see some killer footage pull up Youtube and look for the Zutons live from Abbey Road or pull up just about any of their live versions of "Valerie". I really hope we get to see this band doing a U. S. tour!.
...*sigh* here we go again...
. . yet again another band to come from my shores that assume because they play poppy and have scouse accents they can get into the charts and earn success. . . which they seemed to do. . .
. . . their first album in contrast to this wasn't as awful. . . and although not to my taste when I heard it. . . definetely made me cringe less then this one did. . . allow me to explain. . .
. . . this band consists of the basic troupe of supposed indie (why has the word been reduced to this?) plus a saxophone player. . . their goal? To play mainstream and chilled music that is neither thought provokative nor as catchy as it could have been. . . and musicianship is mediocore at best. . .
. . . now of course if you're buying this you probably heard the singles one called (forgot the name so I'll call it the one with the west side story video) and if you liked that. . . then I feel you are probably in the right place and respect your opinion for wanting to buy this. . . however I strongly advise you buy the debut over this. . .
. . . if you are buying due to the single "Valerie" (covered horribly by Amy Winehouse) the poppy tune is probably the most commercial song on the album. . . therefore this is what you should do. . . JUST BUY THE SINGLE!!! I know that you'll just skip "Valerie" every time so save the artist some credibility and save yourself some money. . .
. . . and if you're just buying this out of sheer curiosity it all depends what kind of music you're into:
1. Progressive music of any kind: DON'T BUY
2. Rap (Idiot): DON'T BUY
3. Old Indie (the good kind: DO NOT BUY!!!
4. New "supposed" indie: . . . you may buy
5. Laid back pop music: Buy
. . . yes. . . in conclusion buy this if you feel the need. . . but to me the music is too formualic and doesn't show anything of interest to me. . . and singer can't sing. . . that's about it.
Tired of Hanging Around by the Zutons
Really fresh sound - many good songs on the CD - Great voice and Sax adds a touch to make it feel like early rock n' roll.
Sophomore Slump?
Not quite up to the level of innovation & fresh ideas presented on their first disc, Who Killed. . The Zutons. A decent listen however.
