tejas The CD arrived 2 weeks before the due date, I was very impressed and pleased. This was a great buy, I would buy from amazon again and will do so in the future. Thankyou .
Pan Am Highway Blues = best song ever
Buy it. I can't even sum up the elements of this CD. You won't be disappointed.
Not the original sound of album, but still so good!
The other reviews are accurate in that they have changed the sound, i. This is very good album. e. overdubbing the sound, such as the drums. It is still a great album, it just does not sound like it would have in 1976. It sounds like instead, 1988. Which is fine when you hear the rock and roll that comes out today. The first two songs on the album, "It Only Love" and Arrested While Driving Blind" are the two real standouts on this album. I hail from Amarillo, Texas, so this album is required listening for those from the Lonestar State. Again, very good album, I just wish they had not messed with the original sound of album. I hope they remaster this album in its original sound like they have done with other ZZ Tops albums such as "Tres Hombres" and "Fandango. " I still recommend this for any classic rock fan and ZZ Top fans! .
Let's get it straight...There are now three recording styles with these '70's reissue albums.
I chose this one for simplicity sake. The three styles can be heard on the song "Waitin' For The Bus". The first original vinyl sound on CD can be heard on the first 1990 version of the "Best Of ZZtop" CD. The 2004 is slightly cleaner and louder.
The second sound which everyone including myself can't stand and can be heard on "Tejas" is NOT a drum machine effect, but a digitally created sound volumizing filter to inject an artificial room ambience or slight echo to ALL sounds including the vocals and guitar as heard on the "Six Pack" album. IMO this is a BAD DIGITAL FILTER because it causes the drums to recede in the background giving it a tinny, sizzley, shrill and artificial texture with the intent, I'm assuming, of creating a more live sound.
This is what folks here are referring to as a remixed or rerecorded version. It could be the members did go back and rerecord all the '70's albums to CD, but I'm having a hard time distinguishing between these since I no longer have the original vinyl/cassette to compare against. I do remember getting the original 1990 "Tres Hombres" CD and reacting as others here because of its more modern but shrill live studio sound.
The "Best Of" version has the original sound dampened studio recording where all sounds have equal loudness without the room ambience and echo. Listen closely to the timbre of the first non-high hat/snare drum soft cymbol crash at the beginning of "Waiting For The Bus". It sounds the same on all recordings.
The third sound is the new and improved original vinyl recording heard on "Best Of" but with the drum's low end beefed up with overall loudness on all sounds increased. Basically a slight but noticeable pre-amp has been applied to the recording like they do with Electronica and Rap. The artificial echo/room ambience sound is gone. This third sound of "Waiting For The Bus" can be heard on the 2006 "Tres Hombres" Rhino reissue.
You can hear all three versions of these recordings listening to the Amazon samples of "Waiting For The Bus" on the three albums mentioned here.
Hopefully Rhino will reissue "Tejas" the same way which is why I'm debating on whether to buy this version or wait.
Geez! This will make the forth time I've had to repurchase the same album starting with the vinyl version of "Tres Hombres" back in the '70's, then the cassette version, then the first 1990 CD reissue and now the Rhino version. What a racket!
Welcome comments on this.
LP or CD...a no-brainer choice!
Yesterday I bought the LP in a used store and the difference is immediately clear. I first purchased this on CD and liked the songs despite the tinny sound quality. Frank Beard's drums are actual drums vice whatever they put on the CD. Now I know why that 1976 tour was THE SHOW to see back then. Easily one of their best albums and it should be heard on vinyl. Now, go get your LP!.
