great you all six zztop albums from the pre mtv days you hear what the roots of the band is , blues and its great . when i bough this set i read that it sounds bad but to me it sounds fine. you hear songs that should be on classic rock radio. so if love zz top yes buy this set you can't go wrong.
Sounds Great If You Never Heard It Before..
Obviously expectations of what you think you will hear will color your experience of listening to this then released solid collection. . . For the die hards of course you will seek out the original unhampered releases with the bonus tracks, as for the younger who are often more synth driven and used to the Eliminator and thereafter really different sounding ZZ Top which became more sexy and gut hitting immediate with pyrotechnics in the back ground, this is a rare release that will place you in those blues rock times.
I still give it top billing because it is a pleasurable listen without comparisons coming from a 50 year old reviewer who saw in concert at New York's Madison Square Garden (Felt Forum) in the mid 1970's no less ZZ Top as the headliner for Slade. Now that is a little more peculiar than this 6 pack which remains good music (really exciting sounding on the Ipod) that to my ears is not that radically different but just a touch more of Kraftwerk rather than Texas Urban blues. .
Used CD
When I opened it the case looked old. I purchased this ZZTop CD used. I opened it and was surprised that the CD's looked like new. I was very satisfied with it. I would not hesitate to buy another used CD. Thank you.
I love ZZ Top but do not love remixed classic ZZ Top! [Not remastered!]
Their drums and bass have been re-recorded to sound more like their big hit Eliminator. Like "One Foot In The Blues" this 6 album set is 100% NOT the original sound of these albums. The only two albums that are available remastered and in their original sound is Tres Hombres and Fandango. You would also do well with Rancho Texicana: The Very Best of ZZ Top or Chrome, Smoke & BBQ [Box Set]. Every song on Rancho Texicana is also on the box set so no need for both unless you want the smaller set for the car or something.
That being said, every other record except Deguello (1979) was futurized up through El Loco (1981). Only Deguello was spared. Who knows why? Publishing rights?
In short, Chrome, Smoke & BBQ is 75 - 80% of each album represented here but remastered and in the original sound aka just like the vinyl. So, these albums have already been remastered and released in part on C, S & BBQ. And 2 of them have been re-released in their entirety. Don't waste your money on this tripe! And do not buy ZZ Top's Greatest Hits and One Foot In The Blues for the same reason.
.
Hey it's not all THAT bad
Well, I listened to it, and the drum remixes aren't that bad. Those of you who stumbled upon my review for the 1992 'Greatest Hits' album, I complained that 'Tush' and 'La Grange' were offered in mediocre enhanced drum remixes. In fact, I really like them!
While I've read that they (the drum remixes) sound "dated," "stupid" and 'The Six Pack' has been called "a waste of time," it's actually not. While I do question why they decided to enhance the drum, because why not just offer a box set of the originals, it does sound interesting.
My favorites with the boosted drums include 'Waitin For The Bus' and 'Jesus Just Left Chicago,' both from the 1973 'Tres Hombres' album, which was an accidental success for ZZ Top and put them on the map for good.
Also, it's six classic albums combined on three discs! Stop complaining! It's not THAT bad. At least they didn't completely remake the songs into synth-oriented tracks!
Overall, just listen to it. It's a great cheap way to collect six of ZZ Top's best albums. That is, if you aren't a drama queen and can get by with the fact that ZZ Top and Warner Bros. /London Records remixed the drums.
Highly recommended for the non-picky ZZ Top fan.
ENJOY!!!.
