Date: Mon, 20 Feb 2006 20:51:55 -0500 From: dontpoll@aol.com Subject: h/hall_and_oates/youre_much_too_soon.tab This is all my own work. Believe me, I've looked high and low for a tab of this song until I realized I'd have to do it myself. "You're Much Too Soon" Hall & Oates From the album "War Babies" (1974) Transcribed by Brian Canfield Great song, with some fine guitar playing by Todd Rundgren. I'm not a great guitarist, but I'll try my best to tab out some of those arpegios and stuff that he's playing. I love how the song starts in a lush sounding major key, then moves into a funky, minor key thing for the bridge, then back to major again. To be specific, it starts in B major, then transposes to C# minor for the bridge (which is the "Don't get too heavy babe.." part). Then there's that cool linking part ("I love you, but I don't love you") before it goes back into the original key of B major for the outro. Intro: Emaj7 Bmaj7 Emaj7 Bmaj7 C#maj7 Emaj7 Bmaj7 Verse: Emaj7 Bmaj7 Can't find.. Emaj7 Bmaj7 C#maj7 By now.. Emaj7 D#m7 G#m7 Anybody else.. Chorus: C#m7 Bmaj7 A#m7 You're much too much (x3) D#m7 G#m7 Too soooon C#m7 D#m7 E F# Much too much (see riff below) Too sooon (Repeat Verse/Chorus) Bridge: C#m E A G#m C#m E A G#m Dont get too heavy.. C#m E A G#m You've only.. C#m E A G#m Gotta keep it.. C#m E Gotta keep it real.. A G#m Anything.. F#m G#m C#m Everything. A G#m All comes down.. F#6/G# G#6 I love you..but I don't love you.. F#6/G# G#6 I love you.. (Back to Verse Chords) Outro: Emaj7 Bmaj7 Let it go let it go.. Emaj7 Bmaj7 I know I know.. Emaj7 D#m7 G#m7 Let it go.. C#m7 D#m7 E I know.. etc.. Okay, guitar time. First off, I'll just suggest chords to play. What I mean is, I'm not entirely sure where on the neck those above chords are being played in each case. The rhythm guitar part is somewhere buried in the mix, so it's not the clearest thing to hear. But I want to at least give some sorts of chords. Then, I'll try to tab out bits and pieces of Todd's lead guitar. Emaj7 - x79897 Bmaj7 - x24342 C#maj7 - x46564 C#m7 - x46454 C#m - x46654 D#m7 - x68676 G#m7 - 464444 G#m - 466444 A#m7 - x13121 E - x79997 A - 577655 F#6 - (below) G#6 - (below) E---11---------11s9---------------------------------------------- B------12------------11------------------------------------------ G---------13------------11--------------------------------------- D--------------------------11v----------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- E---11---------11s9---------------------------------------------- B------12------------11------------------------------------------ G---------13------------11---13v--------------------------------- D---------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- ^Those are the arpegios Todd plays in the intro, and also at other points in the verse. E----16--14--11---------------------------------------------------- B----16--14--11---------------------------------------------------- G---------------------------------------------------------------- <--this little hook is played D---------------------------------------------------------------- each time Daryl sings, "You're A---------------------------------------------------------------- much too much.." E---------------------------------------------------------------- E---11--9--7--9--11--7------------------------------------------- <---slide between all of those B---11--9--7--9--11--7------------------------------------------- G---------------------------------------------------------------- D---------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- "Too soooon" Listen to the recording to get an idea for the timing on those, because I'm not good at accurately tabbing that sort of stuff. Bridge: E---11s12-12-12---11s12-12-12-12--------------------------------- B---11s12-12-12---11s12-12-12-12--------------------------------- G---11s13-13-13---11s13-13-13-13--------------------------------- D---------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- ^Those are played fast, so again, listen to the record to get an idea of the timing. I'm just trying to get the actual notes down. Todd's solo-ish thingies: During the bridge, there's a part where Todd mimics Daryl's vocal melody with a fast little guitar riff. I'll try to tab out some of that here. I'll quote the corresponding vocal underneath each tab. E-------------14--pb16r14--12h14p12---------------------------- B--14-14--17---------------------------------------------------- G---------------------------------------------------------------- D---------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- "Dont get too heavy babe" (pb = prebend) E---14-16-16-14-12-14-12-pb16r14--12h14p12------------------- B---------------------------------------------------------------- G---------------------------------------------------------------- D---------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- "You've only known me for a week" E--------------14--16p14--12-14--pb16r14--12h14p12------------ B---14-14--17--------------------------------------------------- G---------------------------------------------------------------- D---------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- "Gotta keep it steady babe" E--16-16-14-12-(x4)-------21v----------------------------------- B---------------------------------------------------------------- G---------------------------------------------------------------- D---------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- "Gotta keep it real" There's some more to that solo, just a few more things..but I'm too lazy. The next guitar part I'll tab are his little arpegios in the "I love you, but I don't love you" part. Kinda hard to hear this closely, so it's an approximation: E------9--------9-----------9--11--9------------------------- B--------11--------11-----------------11---11---------------- G--11--------11--------11----------------9------------------- D------------------------------------------------------------ A------------------------------------------------------------ E------------------------------------------------------------ F#6 E------11--------11--------11----13--11-------------------------- B---------13--------13------------------13------13--------------- G--13--------13--------13------------------11-------------------- D---------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- G#6 And then it goes back to the main verse again. That's it for guitar tab. I tried not to half-ass it too much.. Questions/Comments: dontpoll@aol.com
