From: rkh2@ukc.ac.uk The Name: John Wesley Harding above The Title: SAVE A LITTLE ROOM FOR ME ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NB: For the progression of chords in the main part of song and "Dylanish bit" as I call it to sound right, you should use the chord fingerings described at the end, especially Em7, Cmaj7 and Amsus2. G D..Em ...Pack your bags, .... Em Lie down, ...(FADE OUT) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Notes: ~~~~~~ 1. The chords with dots after them are only played briefly as they are transitional chords. 2. If you don't know what I mean by the "Arabian" or "Dylanish" bits, just play along to the album and find out which bits match which chords. The rhythm with which the chord changes and vocals fit together needs to be learnt by listening to the song (which is on the album "The Name Above The Title" in case you didn't know), and the strumming rhythm, too, which is pretty consistent throughout. 3. You should soon get used to the main chord progression (as in the "Dylanish bit") and it will become second nature. What a fabulous harmonic progression it is! You can spot a progression of notes within the chords which matches the bassline (G F# E D C B A D G). 4. The chord shapes below are the ones I'd recommend. The Em7, Cmaj7 and Amsus2 chords should be fingered the same as the normal chord of the same key except that the appropriate finger should be removed. 5. Finally, the FADE OUT! Unless you're recording it, you can't fade out, so either leave off the whole thing or do it (or something similar) and improvise an ending. You should have the feel of the song well enough by then to improvise something, but I wish I could fade myself out gradually - that rhythm and chord progression just seem to want to continue for ever, and to interupt the inexorable flow just doesn't seem quite right. (It's so good I even come up with long words for it). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chords: ~~~~~~~ G chord D chord e||---|---|-o-| G e||---|-o-|---| F# B||---|---|---| B B||---|---|-o-| D G||---|---|---| G G||---|-o-|---| A D||---|---|---| D D||---|---|---| D A||---|-o-|---| B A||---|---|---| A E||---|---|-o-| G E||---|-x-|---| either use thumb on 2nd fret or don't play bass-E string Em chord Em7 chord e||---|---|---| E e||---|---|---| E B||---|---|---| B B||---|---|---| B G||---|---|---| G G||---|---|---| G D||---|-o-|---| E D||---|---|---| D A||---|-o-|---| B A||---|-o-|---| B E||---|---|---| E E||---|---|---| E C chord Cmaj7 chord e||---|---|---| E e||---|---|---| E B||-o-|---|---| C B||---|---|---| B G||---|---|---| G G||---|---|---| G D||---|-o-|---| E D||---|-o-|---| E A||---|---|-o-| C A||---|---|-o-| C E||---|---|---| E E||---|---|---| E Am chord Amsus2 chord e||---|---|---| E e||---|---|---| E B||-o-|---|---| C B||---|---|---| B G||---|-o-|---| A G||---|-o-|---| A D||---|-o-|---| E D||---|-o-|---| E A||---|---|---| A A||---|---|---| A E||---|---|---| E E||---|---|---| E D7 chord e||---|-o-|---| F# B||-o-|---|---| C G||---|-o-|---| A D||---|---|---| D A||---|---|---| A E||---|-x-|---| either use thumb on 2nd fret or don't play bass-E string
