'The Day the world went away' - Nine Inch Nails

Live extended version as heard on 'And all that could have been'

Hi all you NIN fans. This is my very first tab ever so excuse any little errors..

I had to try and tab this song for 2 reasons. 1. I cannot for the life of me find a tab
for this live version anywhere on the internet and 2. I'm sure other people love this song
just as much as me, its the highlight of the live album with the middle sections ultra
tense drumming.

This song is in drop d tuning.

I've seen various versions of the main riff, I believe this to be the most accurate.

/ - slide
p - pull off
h - hammer on

MAIN RIFF

(distortion)

note - If you can be bothered changing guitars or if you can change from standard tuning to
drop d easily enough then play this first main riff in standard tuning hitting all the
chords on the e string to get great distorted slide noises.

The entire vocal is played with just bass so you will be able to change tunings no problem
if you want to play it this way.

The roots for standard tuning are - 10-8-1-3

E |-----------------------------------
B |-----------------------------------
G |--7-7-7-7-5-5-5-5---------------5--
D |--7-7-7-7-5-5-5-5-3-3-3-3-5-5-5-5--
A |--5-5-5-5-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-5-5-5-3--
D |------------------3-3-3-3-5-5-5----

Then some neat high bendy notes appear from a second guitar. Gradually give each note a slight
pre-bend or hit your whammy to imitate the sound on the cd well.

E |--------------12-9-11-8---
B |--------------------------
G |-9-6-8-4------------------
D |--------------------------
A |--------------------------
D |--------------------------

Then it's just bass hitting the roots of the chords along to the vocal. It sounds cool to play
along to the notes with palm mute on guitar as well.

As Trent sings 'The Day the whole world went away' I can hear an a minor played a couple of
times.

E |------
B |--3---
G |--2---
D |--0---
A |------
D |------

Then comes the confusion. I think these are the chords being played.

E |-----------
B |-5/-8-6-7--
G |-6/-9-7-8-- (repeat these 3 chords for as long as necessary.)
D |-7/10-8-9--
A |-----------
D |-----------

Now comes the cool part :) The riff varies around these notes, sometimes hitting 7's and 8's
on the A string.

E |---------------------------
B |---------------------------
G |---------------------------
D |---------------------------
A |--5/3/2h3p2--2h3p2h3/5-----
D |-0----------0---------3-0--

Variation

E |---------------------------
B |---------------------------
G |---------------------------
D |-------------3-----3p2-----
A |--5/3/2h3p2/5-2h3-5--------
D |-0--------------------3-0--

A second guitar sneaks its way in later. Improvise on this with some creative feedback
hitting frets on the B and E string around the 12/15 area.

The distorted chords at the end sound more like this than the main riff.

E |-------------------------------------
B |-------------------------------------
G |-7-7-7-7-10-10-10-10-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-
D |-7-7-7-7-10-10-10-10-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-
A |-5-5-5-5--8--8--8--8-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-
D |-----------------------------3-3-3-3-

You can recreate the 'nah nah nah' part on guitar as well with

E |---------------
B |---------------
G |-----7-6h7p6-4-
D |-7-5-----------
A |---------------
D |---------------

Finish on

E |-----------------
B |-----------------
G |-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-
D |-7-7-7-7-5-5-5-5-
A |-5-5-5-5-3-3-3-3-
D |-----------------

And that is that.
Enjoy :)
