Prince "I'm Yours" From the album "For You" (1978) Nice little funk/rock thing here; and even way back then he's tearing it up on guitar with some really speedy licks. I'm not exactly the fastest gun in the west. In fact, I've only been playing since last September..so I won't be able to do much justice to the song. But I like it, and there's currently no tab..so I'll give it my best. We're in the key of C#minor here..so scale wise it's mostly C# minor pentatonic and C# minor (which is the same as E major pentatonic and E major, if you want to think of it that way) Here's that guitar lick that's introduced about 10 seconds into the song: E-------------------14------------------------------------------------------ B---14--16--17-------16--16h17p16---14---14h16p14-------------------- G---------------------------------------------------------------------16---- D--------------------------------------------------------------------------- A--------------------------------------------------------------------------- E--------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think that's repeated about 8 times, then the main funk groove comes in. There's also a main riff here, based on the C# minor pentatonic scale. I play it at the 9th position/fret. That's the easiest pentatonic pattern to remember. This isn't exact either, but it's something like this: E---------------------------------------------------------------- B---------------------------------------------------------------- G--9--9---------9-----etc..----------9--11--9--------------------- D--------9--11-----11---------9--11------------------------------ A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- ^This is the main riff to know The chords over this part are C#m and A. You can also use power chords if you'd like C#5 (x466xx) and A5 (577xxx) for a more aggressive sound. Then there's that bridge part ("Lover can't you see..") The chords for that are, roughly: B/E (x79877) G#m7 (464444) Amaj (577655) <---easier to play than open position A, due to the G#m7 barre chord that comes before it. "..I'm yours!" E---16p14p12------------------------------------------------- B-----------------16p14p12---------------------------------- G---------------------------------------------------------------x4, REALLY FAST! D---------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- E--16-16-14--------------------------------------------------- B-----------------17p16p14----------------------------------- G-----------------------------------------------------------x4 ALSO REALLY FAST! D---------------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- E---16b19----------------12--12--14b16---14p12--------- B--------------------------------------------------------------14--- G-------------------------------------------------------------------- D-------------------------------------------------------------------- A-------------------------------------------------------------------- E--------------------------------------------------------------------- ^ slow, gradual bend Rinse and repeat..after the next "I'm Yours!" he does another blazing fast lick that even inclues a full bend. This comes in at about 2:19 in the song. Something like this: E---12b14(r12)p9------------------------------------------------- B----------------------12p9------------------------------------------- G----------------------------11p9------------------------------------- D-------------------------------------------------------------x4 Incredibly fast A---------------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------------- Now this is just me speaking, but there's no way in hell I can play that fast enough to make it sound like Prince does on the recording. That's probably child's play for some people, but certainly not me. I've had enough with this song - it makes my realize how bad I am! But I tried; perhaps this is better than nothing! dontpoll@aol.com
