The lead is played by Ed O'Brien on a Les Paul I think, and it is SUPER distorted. I get the almost exact sound when i connect my boss Heavy Metal pedal to my Boss Distortion. Sounds great. You also need to drop the low E string to B (yes, B!!!.)
