Subject: s/satriani_joe/up_in_the_sky.tab Joe Satriani: "Up in the Sky" from the album "Crystal Planet" TABbed and generally messed up by Simon Grimshaw, helped by Rob Howard. Date: 30/4/98 This is the first track from Joe's new album... fairly simple really, unless you want to play the solo note for note. Use a load of distortion, give the EQ a bit of a scooped out look, and have a single echo following a crotchet behind. Here we go... natural harmonics............| Riff A end e--12----7-------5--12-------5------|---------------------------------- B---12----7-----5----12-----5-------|---------------------------------- G----12----7---5------12---5--------|---------------------------------- D-------------5-----------5---------|---------------------------------- A-----------------------------------|---------------------------------- E-----------------------------------|---------------------------------- Repeat Riff A a few times (four if I remember rightly), then... Riff B e------------------------------------------------|-------------------- B------------------------------------------------|-------------------- G--9--9-----------------------7-7-7----------9---|-------------------- D--9--9---------7-x-x-9-x-x-9-------9p7------9---|-------------------- A--7--7--10-x-x-------------------------10-7-7---|-------------------- E------------------------------------------------|-------------------- e-----------------------------|-------------------------------------- B-----------------------------|-------------------------------------- G-----------------------------|--9--9-----------------------7-7-9p7-- D--------7-x-x-9-x-x-9p7------|--9--9---------7-x-x-9-x-x-9---------- A--10-x-x----------------7-7--|--7--7--10-x-x------------------------ E-----------------------------|-------------------------------------- end Riff B e-------------|----------------------------|--------------------------- B-------------|----------------------------|--------------------------- G---------9-9-|----------------------------|--------------------------- D--9p7----9-9-|--------7-x-x-9-x-x---------|--------------------------- A------10-7-7-|--10-x-x------------9/7~~~--|--------------------------- E-------------|----------------------------|--------------------------- Don't stop! Straight into... Riff C end Riff C .5 .5 e-----------------------------------------------------------------|-- B--7br-7---------------------------7br-7--------------------------|-- G---------10p9p7-------------------------10p9p7-------------------|-- D----------------9-9-----9-7-9------------------7-7---9-7-9-------|-- A------------------------------7-7---------------------------7-7--|-- E-----------------------------------------------------------------|-- Repeat Riff C, then Riff A repeats but one octave up... e------------------------------10-10-10------------------------- B-------------10-x-x-12-x-x-12----------12p10------------------- G--9-9-12-x-x---------------------------------12-9-9~~~--------- D--------------------------------------------------------------- A--------------------------------------------------------------- E--------------------------------------------------------------- e------------------------------| B---------10-x-x-12-x-x--------| G--12-x-x---------------9\7-7--| D------------------------------| A------------------------------| E------------------------------| The next two bars follow the same pattern, then Joe blows us away with his musical inventiveness (sarcasm, sorry; I couldn't compose it) by repeating Riff C one octave up, which I play as... .5 e--14br-14--------------------------------------------------------|-- B-----------18p17p15----------------------------------------------|-- G--------------------16-16----14h16-------------------------------|-- D-----------------------------------14-14-------------------------|-- A-----------------------------------------------------------------|-- E-----------------------------------------------------------------|-- .5 e--14br-14--------------------------------------------------------|-- B-----------18p17p15----------------------------------------------|-- G--------------------14-14----14h16-------------------------------|-- D-----------------------------------14-14-------------------------|-- A-----------------------------------------------------------------|-- E-----------------------------------------------------------------|-- I think he repeats this Riff one more time, then hits an E barre chord for about four bars or so, it's either x799xx or x799(10)x I can't decide at the moment. Then (cool bit coming!)... Riff D e--12--12-10--10-12--7--7---/17--17-15--15-14--12--10--12--------|-- B----------------------------------------------------------------|-- G---9---9--7---7--9--4--4---/14--14-12--12-11---9---7---9--------|-- D----------------------------------------------------------------|-- A----------------------------------------------------------------|-- E----------------------------------------------------------------|-- end Riff D e--12--12-10--10-12--7--7----3--3-5--5-7--5----------------------|-- B---------------------------------------------3-5/7-7\5----------|-- G---9---9--7---7--9--4--4----0--0-2--2-4--2----------------------|-- D---------------------------------------------0-2/4-4\2----------|-- A----------------------------------------------------------------|-- E----------------------------------------------------------------|-- This bit repeats in a similar way (the different bit is where he goes up for the high A - the second time it doesn't go down below E at 12th fret, but heads back up again). Then Riff A reappears. Add solo here --> At the end of the solo, something akin to this happens: natural harmonics.......| e--12----7---7--5--4--3.2-----------| B--12----7---7--5--4--3.2-----------| G--12----7---7--5--4--3.2-----------| D-----------------------------------| A-----------------------------------| E-----------------------------------| Then it's back to Riff B, off to Riff D, which this time Joe rounds off with an ascending scale of those octave things, with some fast strumming at the end; play some more natural harmonics (I think!) only descending this time, then out to Riff A and a huge E chord at the end! Phew!
