In this song it sounds like he's playing with only the E A D G B strings,
excluding the high E, So most of the chords are played a little
differently than usual:

but then in the chorus, you wanna open up and play the chords the way
they
would normally be played to make it sound fuller.
 
Of course I could be wrong, but If your guitar is correctly tuned EADGBE
you can play along with the cd and it matches perfectly.  well.. almost
